Along the Way debuted in 2013, presenting a new pose for KAWS’s signature Companion characters. The design features two of his iconic skull-and-bones creatures leaning on one another for support, hands heavy, and eyes cast downward. Two years later, KAWS supersized the composition, installing an 18-foot-tall wooden version of Along the Way in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum, which the institution also acquired for its permanent collection. Monumental versions of Along the Way have also been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas. Modeled after these large-scale sculptures, KAWS released 10-inch vinyl toys of Along the Way in 2019 in an open edition available in three distinct color ways: black, brown, and gray.
